About Red Palm Oil and Carotino

Red palm oil has been used for over 5,000 years starting in Africa. The red palm oil in Carotino comes from environmentally sustainable plantations in Malaysia. Carotino is made from a patented extraction oil process that blends the healthy goodness of canola and red palm fruit oil.

The palm oil in Carotino comes from the red palm oil fruit and NOT from the palm kernel. The palm fruit looks like a plum. The outer fleshy mesocarp gives the palm oil, while the kernel (which is inside a hard shell) gives palm kernel oil. It is rather strange that the two oils from the same fruit are entirely different in fatty acid composition and properties. In palm oil, most of the fatty acids are C16 (i.e. have 16 carbon atoms) and higher, while in palm kernel oil, they are C14 and lower.

Red palm oil contains a healthy balance of all types of fat: 10% polyunsaturated, 40% monunsatuarted and 50% saturated fatty acids, similar to that of the fat tissue in most people on a ordinary diet.

Red palm oil is a minimally processed palm oil that naturally contains a full spectrum of Vitamin E (tocopherols and tocotrienols), and carotenoids (Vitamin A)--which gives the oil its red color. These are natural antioxidants. It is considered the richest source of carotenoiods with concentrations of 700 - 1,000 ppm. That's 300 times more than is contained in carrots.

Importantly red palm oil is one of the few excellent dietary sources of alpha carotene, which has been shown to have even more powerful anticancer effects than beta carotene.

Red palm oil is not hydrogenated, not processed with toxic solvents such as hexane, and contains no trans fatty acids.

Most oils become rancid from exposure to heat, light, and oxygen. Red palm oil is naturally protected by its high level of Vitamin E antioxidants, and has a natural resistance to oxidation and rancidity. It remains stable even when cooked at high temperatures unlike olive oil. Many oils will burn or smoke at high temperatures including olive oil. Hence they are not as suitable for deep frying.
